Sacrifice is a play set in the Jin kingdom of China during the Spring and Autumn Period in the sixth century BC. At the court of Duke Ling (Peng Bo), General Zhao Shuo (Zhao Wenzhuo) and his son, Minister Zhao Dun (Bao Guoan), marginalized the veteran general Tu’an Gu (Wang Xueqi). Tu’an Gu had once set eyes on Princess Zhuang (Fan Bingbing), the eldest sister of the duke, whom Zhao Shuo married. The princess is now expecting a child, solidifying the Zhaos’ relationship with the Lings. After Zhao Shuo wins a battle, Tu’an Gu carries out a complex scheme to kill the duke and place the blame on the Zhao family at the court festivities. Tu’an Gu and his allies massacre the whole Zhao family during the ensuing pandemonium. Heartbroken by her husband’s passing, the princess, under the care of her physician Cheng Ying (Ge You), gives birth to a boy too soon. The princess convinces Han Jue (Huang Xiaoming), a Zhao loyalist, to let Cheng Ying take the kid to safety, despite Tu’an Gu’s orders to murder it. She kills herself after ordering him to give the infant to Gong Sun Chujiu (Zhang Fengyi), a friend of the Zhao family.
To safeguard the survival of the royal baby, Cheng Ying temporarily takes it to his house and persuades Hai Qing, his wife, to exchange it for their newborn boy while Tu’an Gu and his forces search the city for the infant. The masquerade succeeds even if Cheng Ying finally loses both his wife and his kid. Under Tu’an Gu’s nose, Cheng nurtures the child as if it were his own, with a long-term plan for retaliation.
