France

France, officially the French Republic, is a country located mostly in Western Europe, with several overseas regions and territories. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean.

It is bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany to the northeast, Switzerland, Monaco, and Italy to the east, and Andorra and Spain to the south.

The overseas territories include French Guiana in South America and several islands in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The country‘s 18 integral regions span a combined area of 643,801 square kilometers (248,573 sq mi) and a total population of 67.41 million.

France is a unitary semi–presidential republic with its capital in Paris, the country‘s largest city and main cultural and commercial center. Other major urban areas include Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lille, and Nice.

France is one of the most developed countries in the world, with the world‘s fourth–largest economy by nominal GDP, and tenth–largest by PPP. It ranks as the second–largest exporter of goods in the European Union (after Germany) and is a founding member of the Eurozone, the G7, the G20, NATO, the OECD, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). France is a great power and a nuclear weapons state and has the third–largest nuclear arsenal in the world.

It is a leading member state of the European Union and the Eurozone, and a member of the Group of 7, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Organisation for Economic Co–operation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and La Francophonie. When counted together, the total land area of France and its overseas territories is more than 12 million square kilometers (4.6 million square miles).

France is the largest country in the EU and the Eurozone, and the third–largest in the European Union behind Germany and the United Kingdom. France is also the second–most populous EU country after Germany. It comprises territory in Western Europe and several overseas regions and territories.

The European part of France, called Metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. Overseas France includes several island territories in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. France has several possessions in North America including the island of Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

Fiji is an archipelago of more than 330 islands—of which 110 are permanently inhabited—in the South Pacific Ocean about one–third of the way from New Zealand to Hawaii.

Its closest neighbors are Vanuatu to the west, New Caledonia to the southwest, New Zealand‘s the Kermadec Islands to the southeast, Tonga to the east, the Samoas and France‘s Wallis and Futuna to the northeast, and Tuvalu to the north.

The most populous island is Viti Levu, which contains about two–thirds of the population. The capital, Suva, is on Viti Levu‘s southeast coast. The Fijian archipelago is a volcanic archipelago consisting of about 332 islands—of which 110 are permanently inhabited—and 522 islets.

The four largest islands are Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and Kadavu, which make up 87% of the land area of the country. The archipelago is spread over 3.5 million square kilometers (1.4 million square miles). Fiji has a tropical climate, with average temperatures ranging from 22 to 32 degrees Celsius (72 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit).

The country experiences a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October. The population of Fiji is estimated to be 924,302 (July 2017 estimate). The majority of the population is of Fijian descent (57.3%), with Indian descent accounting for 37.6% of the population.

Other ethnic groups include Europeans (2.1%), Chinese (1.4%), and other Pacific Islanders (0.4%). Fiji‘s population is relatively young, with a median age of 26.8 years (2017 estimate). The official languages of Fiji are English and Fijian. Fiji Hindi is also spoken by a minority of the population.

Finland is short for “land of the Finns.” Finland, one of the world’s most northern nations, has a land area of 130,030 square miles in northern Europe. Finland, officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe.

Bounded by the Baltic Sea to its southwest, the Gulf of Bothnia to its west, and the Gulf of Finland to its south, it shares land borders with Sweden to the west, Russia to the east, and Norway to the north. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is the largest city in the country.

Finnish, the native language of the Finns, is among the few Finnic languages in the world. The climate in Finland varies relative to latitude, from a temperate climate in the southernmost part of the country to a subarctic climate in the northernmost part. Finland is primarily a boreal forest biome, with more than 180,000 recorded lakes.

The coastal region is covered in wide clay plains, while the countryside is rocky. The upper part of Finland is covered in arctic scrub, whereas the Lake District is heavily forested.
