Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered by Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the southwest, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and South Sudan to the north.


The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda is in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda also lies within the Nile basin and has a varied but generally modified equatorial climate.

The official languages are English and Swahili, although Luganda, a central language, is also widely spoken. The president of Uganda is Yoweri Museveni, who came to power in January 1986 after a protracted sixyear guerrilla war. The ancestors of the Ugandans were huntergatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago when Bantuspeaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.

Uzbekistan, officially the Republic of Uzbekistan, is a landlocked country in Central Asia. The sovereign state is a secular, unitary constitutional republic, comprising 12 provinces, one autonomous republic, and a capital city.


Uzbekistan is bordered by five landlocked countries: Kazakhstan to the north; Kyrgyzstan to the northeast; Tajikistan to the southeast; Afghanistan to the south; and Turkmenistan to the southwest. Along with Liechtenstein, it is one of the world‘s only two doubly landlocked countries.

Uzbekistan has a diverse cultural heritage due to its position at the crossroads of Eurasia. The official language is Uzbek, a Turkic language written in the Latin alphabet and spoken natively by approximately 85% of the population. Russia has widespread use as alingua franca due to its status as a former Soviet republic. The territory of Uzbekistan was inhabited by Neolithic huntergatherers from the 6th millennium BC.

Between the 4th and 3rd millennia BC, a sedentary agricultural society emerged, along with the appearance of the first cities. This period was followed by the growth of the state of Bactria and later the Persian Empire in the region.
