Thankfully, you don’t need to take a shot in the dark by trying to design your website yourself. Yes, designing a website is not as complicated as it used to be twenty years ago. Gone are those times when you had to type in HTML codes to spawn a page into existence.

There are several user-friendly website builders online that allow you to drag and drop your way into creating a full-fledged website. Even though website building has become easier, creating a revenue generating website that can rank for competitive keywords is more than just a weekend project.

The best way forward is to hire a reliable web design company to conceptualize and create your website. The following are the 5 questions you should ask before hiring any web design expert or firm.

1] Do They Have Any Ideas About How Your Site Should Look Like?

It’s easy to get caught up in your own ideas. However, web design firms do this on a regular basis and they should be able to give you design ideas that are relevant for your industry. While you can reject them, you should at least be open when hearing them out. Also, you don’t want a website design company that relies completely on your ideas.

2] Can They Work with Independent Designers?

If you have an independent designer for all your on-site artwork, then you need a web design firm willing to collaborate with that person. Any good agency (Even ones that offer design services) should be willing to work with an independent graphic designer.

3] Do They Have Experience Creating Responsive Websites?

If a web design firm asks you to build a separate website for mobile users, then they don’t know how to create a responsive design. Ask them specifically about their capabilities of creating a responsive website that optimizes itself based on the type of screen size available to the user.

4] Can They Create Designs that Encourage Better Conversion Rates?

If it was just about creating a pretty website, then you could have done it yourself. However, website developers need to keep one eye on the end goal, which is the conversion rate.

For the uninitiated, conversion rate is the percentage of the total traffic that performs a desired action. It can be buying a product, subscribing to a newsletter, making a business enquiry, or any other goal.

Conversion rates define the productivity of the website and it should be the primary goal when designing a website. A developer needs to create a site that’s easy to navigate and encourages users to click the magic button.

5] Are They Experienced Creating Websites Within Your Industry?

If the website development firm has no experience creating a website in your industry, then it may require them some time to get a grasp of things. While this is not a deal breaker, a web design company that understands the core customers and competitors certainly has an advantage when it comes to creating a productive site.

  • Honestly the development of the web-page should be a two way street. Asking a design team how do they think a page should look without delivering a proper brief is like telling blind man to point to some random object. Think of it more as a collaboration then boss/employee relationship or they will simply resign.
