Upcycling and Repairs: Does Your Current Wardrobe Hold the Key to Your Next Style?

It is always nice to get some new clothes and embrace some fresh style. However, as some of our previous articles have shown, it is fair to say that some items can occasionally come with a considerable price tag.

But, if you are looking for something new to wear, could the answer to your conundrum actually be in your wardrobe already? Put simply, could some repairs or even a bit of upcycling bring your look to life in a whole new way?

Upcycling and Repairs

A real shift

There definitely appears to have been a real shift in the way that people approach buying new items. Earlier this year, the EY UK Future Consumer Index highlighted some fascinating trends in that region, with around half of consumers buying less clothing, shoes and accessories.

It also highlighted that many people are making more sustainable choices, with 55 per cent considering the environmental impact of the items that they buy. In addition, 70 per cent stated that they prefer to repair items rather than replace and 75 per cent added that they are less interested in the latest fashion trends.

But, while such findings offer interesting insight into how people are thinking, it is worth bearing in mind that repairing does not have to mean returning items to their original form. After all, it could well be an opportunity to use your imagination and turn old or unloved items into something completely new.

Upcycling ideas

The art of upcycling old clothing could prove to be a very sustainable hobby. There are numerous ideas to be found online on how to transform items, including changing jeans into a bucket hat and tie-dying old tops.

In addition, there are suggestions like turning jeans into denim shorts, as well as making an oversized sweatshirt into a dress. Ultimately, it is well worth taking a look and doing some research if you are intrigued or keen to embrace this concept.

However, if you’re looking for some inspiration or resources to get started with embroidery, you might want to consider searching for free embroidery designs online. Additionally, if you have already decided to take the leap, it is worth keeping a few things in mind. For instance, you need to prepare and have some essentials before you get started. Depending on your project, these might include sewing kits, glue, and potentially a bigger purchase like a sewing machine.

It may also be worth educating yourself on a few hacks that might help when things get messy. For example, tips on glue removal may seem arduous and irrelevant for the most part, but it’s so common for DIY-ers to find themselves prying at globs of glue, which have ended up on materials they ought not to have come into contact with.

Not only this but in the process of fixing up antiquated finds from the loft, you can end up getting adhesives painfully stuck to your skin, too. Luckily, there are tips and tricks galore from experienced DIY veterans. For instance, some solutions call for an application of household staples like soap, lemon juice and even olive oil.

However, there is also the possibility of using laundry detergent or glue remover, so it is worth considering your options before your fun with sequins and other items gets out of hand.

In addition, if you choose to make use of dye, you may need some help removing that too. This is another one of those common DIY issues that affect us all a lot more than we’d like them to. Tintex discusses removing stains from your skin and explains that both soap and oil might come in handy.

Finding the answer

So, if you want to refresh and breathe new life into your wardrobe, why not take a look at what is already in there? You never know, the answer might have been in front of you all along.

Repairing and upcycling have become big talking points in recent times, with the concepts creating fresh possibilities for old and neglected clothing.

Buying something new can be pretty satisfying, but using your imagination to bring a fresh feel to a forgotten item could take things to a whole new level. So, why not see what you can do with your wardrobe today?
