IPL Winners and Runners List of All Seasons (2008 – 2022)

Indian Premier League or IPL, as it is popularly referred to as, is held each year in India since 2008. It is a Twenty20 cricket league founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Eight cricket teams have especially been formed for this much loved cricket tournament. These teams represent different Indian states and include cricketers from different countries.

Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils (renamed as Delhi Capitals), Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrises Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Banglore are the IPL teams that have been taking on each other year after year.

Five other teams were also formed but they have been dissolved. These were Pune Warriors India, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Deccan Chargers, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant.

IPL teams are mostly owned by prominent Indian celebrities and business tycoons.

Chennai Super Kings that was earlier owned by the Former ICC Chairman, N. Srinivasan and Mumbai Indians owned by Mukesh Ambani have by far been the most competitive IPL teams.

While Mumbai Indians has won the championship four times, Chennai Super Kings has won it thrice. Kolkata Knight Riders which is co-owned by Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Jai Mehta is close behind with two wins. Here is a complete list of IPL winners from 2008 to 2019 for all you IPL enthusiasts.

IPL 2008 Winner (Rajasthan Royals)

IPL was played for the first time in the year 2008. Different teams competed with each other during the tournament that gained instant popularity.

Rajasthan Royals co-owned by Manoj Badale and Lachlan Murdoch played against Chennai Super Kings. Rajasthan Royals won the match. Australian cricketer, Shane Watson who forms a part of the Rajasthan Royals team was awarded the Player of the Series award.

  • Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings.
  • Final venue: DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
  • Player of the series: Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals).

IPL 2009 Winner (Deccan Chargers)

IPL 2009 received an overwhelming response. People from various parts of the world booked tickets for the tournament and attended the event.

Deccan Chargers owned by Gayatri Reddy and Royal Challengers Bangalore formerly owned by Vijaya Mallay entered the finals. Deccan Chargers emerged winner. Australian cricketer, Adam Gilchrist who was a part of the Deccan Chargers team was declared the Player of the Series.

  • Player of the series: Adam Gilchrist (Deccan Chargers).

IPL 2010 Winner (Chennai Super Kings)

IPL 2010 saw Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians take on each other in the finals. It was a fierce competition and Chennai Super Kings emerged winner. Sachin Tendulkar who forms a part of the Mumbai Indians team was awarded the Player of the Series.

  • Player of the series: Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians).

IPL 2011 Winner (Chennai Super Kings)

Chennai Super Kings reached the finals yet again. This time the team competed with Royal Challengers Bangalore. CSK defeated RCB thereby winning the league for the second time in a row. Jamaican cricketer, Chris Gayle from Royal Challengers Bangalore was named the Player of the Series.

IPL 2012 Winner (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Kolkata Knight Riders entered the finals to take on Chennai Super Kings. KKR defeated CSK on their home ground as they won the match by 5 wickets. Sunil Narine from the KKR team was named the Player of the Series.

  • Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings.
  • Final venue: M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
  • Player of the series: Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders).

IPL 2013 Winner (Mumbai Indians)

Chennai Super Kings entered the finals for the fourth time in a row. It played against Mumbai Indians in Kolkatta. The match was won by Mumbai Indians by a margin of 23 runs. Rajasthan Royal’s Shane Watson was named the Player of the Series.

  • Winner: Mumbai Indians.
  • Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings.
  • Final venue: Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
  • Player of the series: Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals).

IPL 2014 Winner (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Kings XI Punjab entered the finals for the first time in 2014. The team played against Kolkata Knight Riders that gave it a tough competition. KKR emerged winner defeating Kings XI Punjab by 3 wickets. Australian Cricketer, Glenn Maxwell who belongs to the KKR team was named the Player of the Series.

  • Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders.
  • Runner-up: Kings XI Punjab.
  • Final venue: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
  • Player of the series: Glenn Maxwell (Kings XI Punjab).

IPL 2015 Winner (Mumbai Indians)

In 2015, Mumbai Indians played the finals against Chennai Super Kings. MI emerged winner beating CSK by 41 runs. Jamaican cricketer, Andre Russell who forms a part of the KKR team was declared the Player of the Series.

  • Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings.
  • Final venue: Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
  • Player of the series: Andre Russell (Kolkata Knight Riders).

IPL 2016 Winner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

This was the first time that Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the finals. Royal Challengers Bangalore also made it to the finals. The match was interesting and to everyone’s surprise, Sunrisers Hyderabad won the match beating RCB by 8 runs. Ace India cricketer, Virat Kohli who is a part of the RCB team became the Player of the Series.

  • Winner: Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • Runner-up: Royal Challengers Bangalore.
  • Final venue: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
  • Player of the series: Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore).

IPL 2017 Winner (Mumbai Indians)

Rising Pune Supergiants owned by Sanjiv Goenka of the RPG Group entered the finals along with Mumbai Indians. This was the first time RPS entered the finals.

Mumbai Indians that had been here many times won the match. Ben Strokes from the RPS team was awarded the title of Player of the Series. Rising Pune Supergiants was formed in the year 2015 and dissolved in 2017.

  • Runner-up: Rising Pune Supergiant.
  • Final venue: Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad.
  • Player of the series: Ben Stokes (Rising Pune Supergiant).

IPL 2018 Winner (Chennai Super Kings)

Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the finals. They played hard to win and gave a tough time to each other. Chennai Super Kings finally emerged winner. Sunil Narine was named the Player of the Series.

  • Runner-up: Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • Final venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
  • Player of the series: Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders).

IPL 2019 Winner (Mumbai Indians)

2019 saw the twelfth season of IPL. The final match was played between two of the strongest IPL teams, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Both the teams had won IPL thrice earlier.

It was interesting to see as to who would take the trophy this time. It was a close fight as Mumbai Indians won by 1 run. The team became fourth time winner of IPL. KKR’s Andre Russell won the Player of the Series title.

  • Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings.
  • Final venue: Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad.
  • Player of the series: Andre Russell (Kolkata Knight Riders).

IPL 2020 Winner (Mumbai Indians)

Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets in the Indian Premier League 2020 final at the Dubai International Stadium to clinch their record-extending fifth IPL title.

IPL 2021 Winner (Chennai Super Kings)

Chennai Super Kings became the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 Winner. The Final of IPL 2021 was played between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on 15th October 2021 and CSK won the match by 27 runs.
