10 strategies for designing websites

Strategies for designing a website are simply down to the process you use to design. If your idea of a strategy is to give it a go, then like a turtle cuddling a crocodile–things are going to get bad before they get better. Instead of trying to nail down a strategy, why not build your own based on some of the ideas you read below? Here are ten in no particular order.

strategies for designing websites

1 – Content management system:

Abbreviated as CMS, this is a program that builds your website for you. Before the content management system there were web designers that were rinsing people dry, but now they are going out of business because of CMS programs, and frankly they deserve it. A CMS allows you to create a website and even to work on your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and monetize it too. There are plenty of content management systems to choose from online and most are free.

2 – Responsive Design:

You need to integrate this into your strategy like a giraffe needs to integrate a scarf in the arctic. Even though responsive design is not yet officially an SEO matter, it soon will be since the trend for mobile Internet has not died. Having two websites (one for mobile and one for desktop) is soon to be a thing of the past.

3 – Customize like all others do:

This is counter intuitive like having a low fat candy apple as health food, but bear in mind that customization is not all it is cracked up to be. People do not know what they want, and when they are asked they often ask for things they like already because they have no frame of reference for what they may have. So, even though you are told to customize to the extreme by other “experts” you should consider your audience and what they truly want.

4 – Build in a different perspective:

In other words, if you are building a video website, then offer a blog post section, maybe even having the post appear below a video. If you are building a website for a photographic portfolio, then consider having click-to-activate comments from the photographer.

5 – Versatile:

This does not mean build your website with a mind to integrating a nuclear submarines operating system. It just means leave room or create places where you may expand the website into new areas without it appearing as if the new areas are tacked on.

6 – Expansion possibilities:

You should be versatile enough to be able to expand comfortably (as said in point four) but also consider planning ahead so that you can grow the current website content. Look at how blogs grow but how they grow in a straight line (one after the other on the same thread). You do not have to follow a blogs example, but consider how you may organically grow your current content at a later date.

7 – Use software programming:

Like a tadpole in toilet water, you are swimming in a mess if you do not take adequate precautions. It should go without saying that you should test your website before putting it online. Make sure you test it on a number of browsers and devices, and even test with mobile devices if it is not responsive as it still may look okay.

8 – Consider your consumer and your marketplace:

Remember earlier when you learnt that consumers do not know what they would like to have because they have no frame of reference? Well they can tell you what they do like already. So, why not learn what your current consumers already like about the websites they currently visit, and then try to copy some of the better features of those websites?

9 – Complete every SEO aspect:

It is your job to be SEO (Search Engine Optimization) conscious, so make sure you do not damage the SEO of the web page via your design.

10 – Brainstorm for new design ideas:

Remember that people tend to like what they already have, so be careful about new design ideas, but that does not mean you cannot have them. Do not be afraid to try out a few new things as your consumers may learn that they like your idea.

11 – Test with trial and error:

Once you are online you should start testing your website. Seeing which web pages people leave the quickest may be helpful as it will show you what you are doing wrong. If you have pages with lots of traffic then ask yourself why it is not filtering onto the other pages.
